What is the difference between a clam and an oyster?

clams have a smooth shell, oyster shells are rough. Clams live under the sand, oysters live on rocks. Clams have a symmetrical shell, oysters have a cupped lower shell and a flat upper shell. Oh and yes... Oysters produce pearls
