Getting shot in Colombia..?

My boyfriend is from Cali,Colombia,and of course we have talked about me taking a trip with him to Colombia the next time he goes,but my dad (whom loves my bf) has made it a point to tell me about how in some countries like in Honduras and (possibly) Colombia,that there is people who try/do shoot americans or kidnap them and such. Does this build in the back of my mind? Yes cause im the person whom always finds the bleak side of things. I guess im asking like,whats the facts on this,the probability, because I dont want to miss out on something just because im being a worry-wart.
