Why do debt collection company serve summons only by mailing it?

Why debt collection company only send summon by mail? I have never heard anyone served in person or notice left at the door. A defendant can ask the Court to dismiss the case for the reason of improper serving. Sending summons only by mail is improper according to the Court.
